"Perot '08"

Just thought you'd like Dean's comment

Here's my response.
"LOL. At this point I'm ready for it I think... that's the one great thing about Huck is that he understands working class concerns...Perot did too...dare I say it's a Conservative tradition to be for the people and suspicious of corporate power. How many times have you heard a Republican favor corporate bail outs but won't even consider some social programs. If Huck can work that he'll be a giant.
I'll never forget being at a gas station and listening to a 26 year old say how she dressed a nasty finger cut herself because she couldn't afford the co pay...I mentioned that to Gingrich and he accused her of buying Ho Hos and Cigs instead of helping herself. Sorry Newt, she was buying gas. That's what turns me off about Republicans who really aren't conservatives...Teddy R would never have subscribed to that cynical view of citizens...."

Your reaction to Mr. Gingrich that morning was quite different than mine. I believe he has been calling out for personal responsibility for quite some time and was simply explaining his philosophy during the interview. It sadly appears that more and more Americans are absolutely incapable of being responsible for their own health and finances. I am not sure if they are simply incapable or just find it more comfortable to have someone else be ultimately responsible for their own safety and security. Every American should ask "which do I value more, my personal freedom or my personal security?" I always vote for my personal freedom and I would suspect that most Americans during President Theodore Roosevelt's term would have done the same. I am sure we had many negligent Americans that were unable to tend a basic wound back in the early 1900s. Most folks would either end up with a nasty infection or lose a finger or possibly a hand. This negligence would have been a learning experience which provided them the opportunity to pay closer attention the next time they or someone in their family suffered a basic wound. Each time you allow your government to provide a little more personal security you lose a little more of your personal freedom. It is a slow but very dangerous process that some Americans are more than willing to partake in.

    Mitch,

Where does Newt stand on eliminating the tobacco farm subsidies? Do this and the price of addictive cigarettes would likely skyrocket, making it unaffordable to smoke and freeing up money for co-pays. If we are talking personal economic freedom here, my government confiscated money would go to the girl who cut her finger before the tobacco farmers, whom I place on the same moral plane as the opium growers in Afghanistan; the only real difference is that the addictive drug they grow here is legal and subsidized with our tax dollars.

Jaime, it may have been gas when you saw her but I wonder what other things she chooses to spend her money on so there is no co-pay money available. How many times have we all seen the interviews of desperate welfare recipients being cruelly treated by the system whle in the background we see the big screen TV, cable box and PS3. Bill McClellan wrote over the weekend about a woman who is struggling with welfare rules. She has seven children! Her response was, "I'm not going to apologize for having children, you know what I'm saying?" Yes, what she's saying is she expects US to pay for her irresponsibility. She says she gets help from one of the children's father. Where are the other ones, how many are there, seven? If you want platinum HBO, don't whine to me about health care. If you want to have umpteen kids out of wedlock, don't whine to me you can't buy food. If you buy an SUV don't let me hear you whining about the price of gas.

I fully agree that personal responsibility is lacking in this country. Makes me sick sometimes. But my problem with Newt's comment is that he's labeled this girl (and how many others) under that stereotype. Don't get me wrong - it's hard not to do. You see so many people w/big screens yet are on welfare. Me & my husband would like to help out a needy family this holiday. But we are hesitant because we don't want our time, effort & money going toward a new Xbox game instead of the electric company. There are people out there that truely need the help and/or cannot afford healtcare, etc. I wish I knew who they were, but truth is, nobody is ever gonna know, unless you personally know the situation. Someone in Newt's position shouldn't just assume that all situations are the same and that everyone is irresponsible. There are real problems in this country, healthcare being one of them. Just because you have abusers in the system, doesn't mean it isn't a problem.
