The Un-Making of America

The birth of our brave new Bull Moose America Movement begins on this the day our major parties sold out America. I didn't intend for this Movement to begin this way. Heaven knows there was plenty of reason before today to demand more of those who have the privilege of steering this Republic. But today offers a special insight into how Democrats and Republicans are really all about making deals that either keep them in power or keep the money coming in or, often, both. Too often they lull Americans to sleep and slip out on the town with their special interest donors.
Today, though, it was clear Democrats and Republicans, with a nod from President Bush, perfected the art of audacity: those politicians overfed on our trust basically gathered in a back room and pooped out 12 million new voters with their immigration amnesty plan.
They'll get a nice little golf clap and "bravo" from big business and Hispanic leaders who just inherited a new group of pawns, but they're going to get a notice from Bull Moose America: This is the beginning of the end of your rule.

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

It was 100 years ago when American Super Stud Teddy Roosevelt warned against the purposeful demise of borders and culture. He could never have imagined the architects of The Great American Suicide Pact would be the very men and women we elected.
But immigration is merely one issue that surely has TR lifting weights all over again in preparation for a grand re-entrance. The United States populace has been ill served on many fronts by the two major parties. The Democrats and Republicans are basically Coke and Pepsi with law degrees. So time and time again on major issues of our day, they enter the hallowed halls of our Capitol like they're entering a Courthouse in Munchkinland, USA, and they sue then settle.
Sue, then settle.
Sue, then settle.
Like it is for lawyers, it's a sweet operation for politicians. They get to bloviate and bluster, yell and scream, hold news conferences and attack each other, get check after check from the folks who like it when they yell. They get you and me yelling at each other and tearing each others' yard signs down, and then they leave the Capitol and go have drinks and steaks together.
You already know what they've done with immigration, and in a cruel twist the news media has played along and called this brash sell out a victory for "bi-partisanship."
But before you rush to the streets in appreciation, there's more these disinterested and elected Americans have NOT given us.

Abortion
: Here's the drill. Right wingers push to overturn Roe vs. Wade and make abortion illegal and send doctors to jail. Left wingers seem to want an abortion clinic at every Wal-Mart with special rooms for partial birth killings. Republicans raise money and win primaries sucking up to the Right. Democrats raise money and win primaries sucking up to the Left. What do we get? continued high abortion rates. Abstinence education, curbing unwanted pregnancies, forcing parents of the boys to pay up for an out of wedlock child are all sitting on the cutting room floor of the Capitol back rooms. The politicians gain, Americans concerned about human rights lose.

Taxes: Democrats and Republicans make a great scene debating tax rates and taxes on the rich and tax cuts for the middle class and on and on. But in the end neither party will let go of the main fuel for their now very well organized vote buying schemes known as entitlement programs and corporate handouts. It's why the Fair Tax--supported by many educated Americans--is largely ignored by Democrats and Republicans. (
www.Fairtax.org)

Natural Resources/Conservation/Oil: Republicans have managed to disavow any of their party's heritage when it comes to conservation and environmental issues. The Party suck up to corporate greed and irresponsibility is one reason why TR created the Bull Moose Party. Since those days the pendulum has swung in favor of the enviro-fascists who have Democrats by the balls. The fact is we can still be environmentally conscious, we can still protect our natural resources, we can still demand development of alternative fuels, we can still tie oil company tax breaks to requirements for refinery maintenance
and repair (bad maintenance and disrepair of refineries are seen as partial reasons for high gas prices
www.gasbuddy.com) , and we can still push for better environmental stewardship and less dependency on foreign oil and STILL think Al Gore's Global Warming Jihad is BS.

National Security: So we come around, do we? A Republican President who nails it when it comes to protecting the country from terrorism ignores the border issue and then helps invite more squatters in. Democrats are hopeless on national security issues because the ACLU forces their women and men to wear on ACLU certified panties. So whenever there's a matter of National Security import, the Republicans will sue for the highest degree and then settle with Democrats who don't want to offend terrorists because if Republicans don't settle with Democrats then Democrats get in the way of President George "paco" Bush's greasing the wheels for his business friends and the Hispanics who promise to vote Republican in 2008.

So you get the drift here? You see, there's a drift alright, but you're not part of it. There's a Presidential race that began a friggin YEAR AND A HALF EARLY just because they needed time to raise money to buy the commercials to tell you what's important before you have a chance to chime in.

So this is one American's time to chime. Don't bother going to the Wikipedia entry for the Bull Moose Party of TR.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_Party_(United_States,_1912)
The political operatives from both parties have managed to paint (via Wik's editing program) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:About the movement of that time as a failure and a bleak prospect in any time in history. But Bull Moose America is off and running. Please join in and help save the Republic from the black hole of Democrat and Republican politics.
It's time to take the country back, it's time to find our voices.
Welcome, Brave Americans, to the New Movement.

My husband is a second generation Puerto Rican American- his father emigrated LEGALLY in 1957. I could go on- but I want to know: WHO CAN I VOTE FOR THAT WILL REPRESENT US?!? Here's the rip- we've got to find someone that not only will take on corporate welfare, Hispanic special interest, and liberal "you must be racist if you don't agree with us" ejits- but will also not be some crazed ideologue. Because I fear that's what we're going toward- the two sides are separating and no reasonable ground will remain. I can feel my own resentment rising- I know I'm not alone- so how long will it be before there's a full blown race war and some crazy dude ends up leading us into another holocaust? You don't say how you intend to affect the changes we all know are necessary in order to protect our country. Food for thought...every elected official has to swear and oath to protect the constitution of the USA, in effect to protect the current laws of the land. By going along with the current trend in politics (especially the "imigration" issue) violates each and every one of these oaths. Should not every politician who violates the oath they swore be tossed out of office?

Great statement by TR. I voted republican since 1980 until the last election when I voted straight 3rd parties. Bush said after his election in 2004 when the republicans made huge gains that he had accumulated political capital and that he intended to spend it. Well... He spent nothing but more money, created more bureaucracy, opened the door to people who have no desire to learn about our founding and the principles on which our nation is based to gain an appreciation to deeply understand what it means to be an American. Caved to liberal demands to purge his administration of every real conservative that was in it. Caved in to liberal restraints placed on on Iraq. And tried to pass over on us a personal crony to be a supreme court justice. How is this different from what the democrats do? Why not have the democrats and republicans fight over the millions of Americans who are frustrated with them rather than fighting over every little piece of poop special interest group? I'm tired of watching this 60's generation of politicians give away so freely what has been in the past and today paid for, so proudly and with knowing moral justification, by the lives of brave men and women of previous generations, and for those fighting for us today, the generation following these shameless politicians.

About 5 years ago, the Los Angeles Times reported that over 80% of foreign nationals did not want to become US citizens but were here to make a living then return to their home countries. It is illegal for foreign nationals to own land within 60 miles of the coast in Mexico. So anyone becoming a US citizen could not return to Mexico and own land.
Since then, Mexico has legalized dual nationality, and suddenly Mexicans realized the advantage of being able to hold citizenship in both countries, even though US law does not to allow holding dual nationalities.
Also, illegal Chinese aliens are more than willing to pay upwards of $25,000 to get into this country. Our green cards are a marketable commodity. Why not up the price to at least $10,000 or more. And, make them ineligible to participate in our social security system. Any money they have contributed to our SS system was the result of an illegal enterprise and should be forfeited.
Bull Moose America should begin to champion the repeal of the 14th amend. to stop the use of anchor babies to stay in this country. Since its purpose was to bring Blacks into our system after the civil war, and that purpose has been served, its wording must be changed to reflect the reality of America today and stop its abuse.

In Americas fast, instantaneous culture if something is not resolved within a short period of time it is considered wasteful and harmful.

What do the people in congress really think that we, the American People, want from them?

Why do politicians think that bringing in a very cheap workforce will make some of the American People already here struggling to make a living, happier?

Why are politicians putting illegal immigrants in front of the legal American Public?

They won’t answer my questions because I'm just a middle-aged, middle-income, middle of the mid-west, middle of the road person. I don't own corporations, nor do I own the welfare system. Since I am what most American People are, they don't listen to us. Why, because we don't make waves.

I always said that the parties were different. Hell, the Dem's were libs and I knew it. The Republicans were mostly conservative with the exception of a few R.I.N.O.'s and I knew that. Jamie, you are absolutely correct; this harebrained scheme will be our ruination in years to come. Furthermore, it will do nothing to stop illegal immigration in the future, as more people will be attracted by the ease with which others circumvented U.S. law.

Furthermore, we cannot continue this immoral plantation system where Mexico sends us their surplus population to work at menial jobs. A plantation economy wrecked the Antebellum South, and this modern variant will do the same for us by stifling initiative and depressing wages.

Furthermore, it does nothing to address the cause of the problem which is socialism in Mexico.

All this will do is metastasize the problem.

The back biting and Republican bashing is one thing, but to give amnesty to criminals? Puhlease..... If this bill passes it threatens the American way of life and culture. This country was built by strong people who were committed to the success of this union. A little personal background information; I have been searching for some time now for a way to express my ideas, opinions, and frustrations about the current state of politics and government. I found myself drawn to libertarianism which was a better fit overall, but still flawed. I now call myself a neo-libertarian. Information on neo-libertarianism can be found at www.neo-libertarian.com, check it out if you wish. Now, back to business, for too long each of us has went to ballot box and dutifully cast our vote with the hope that finally the promises would be kept yet over and over again we have been let down. But, what were we to do? To vote for a third party in order make a point has historically been a wasted vote, to not vote at all as a form of protest is simply irresponsible, and to vote for a liberal is sheer insanity. The Republican Party is making it easy for conservatives to turn away from it. If this immigration bill passes, the Pubbies will have signed their own death warrant.

Not only will they have officially declared themselves little more than "Democrat Lite", they will have started a process that will produce millions of new voters that will vote overwhelmingly Democratic. With or without the support of conservatives, they will be a minority party in the way they were for the years bewteen FDR and Reagan.

Why should conservatives waste their time supporting a party that will provide them with only half-hearted, ineffective representation?

If President Bush thinks going his own way is such a great thing, let's give him a little more of it.

Mister President, you are on your own when it comes to Al Gonzales. You are on your own when it comes to No Child Left Behind. You are on your own when it comes to defending why you have so terribly constrained our brave men and women in uniform from doing what they are trained to do to secure victory in Iraq.

What have you really accomplished, Mr. President?
-- Your tax cuts did produce years of economic prosperity. Unfortunately, they will expire in 2010, if they are not repealed before then. Meanwhile, the Democrats, and probably a lot of Republicans, are eager to tax the wealth that prosperity generated.
-- You vastly increased the federal government's role in pulic education. While our children may not be learning more, better, or faster, they certainly are learning at greater expense to the taxpayer.
-- You signed legislation (the McCain-Feingold Bill) that limits the expression of political thought perhaps more than any in the history of this nation.
-- You are eager to sign legislation that will scuttle our immigration laws, drastically change the character of our society, make a mockery of the rule of law, and lead to voting rights for millions who will vote against your party and the political philosophy you claim to represent.
-- You squandered the support of the American people by bungling your execution of an admittedly good idea to support democracy in the Middle East.

A party that attempts to stand for everything in reality stands for nothing. George W Bush and Karl Rove thought they were building a "big tent" that would bring the Republicans majorities for years. What they have built is an empty tent that will doom the Republicans to fifty years of insignificance, if not well-deserved extinction.

The Whigs made themselves extinct in the 1840's and 1850's by failing to address the evil of slavery. Their successors, the Republicans, are close to doing the same to themselves.

No nation does well under the rule of a single party. Who will represent those who believe the policies advocated by Democratic Party are not what is best for America?

-- Requiring aliens to register annually (as in the past) under penalty of deportation

Until our government regains the confidence of its citizens and the respect of those who violate our immigration laws, it is premature to offer concessions to those here illegally.

While Senate Bill 1348 promises to quickly issue renewable visas to those here illegally, it lacks reasonable assurance that the restrictions and penalties it purports to provide will ever be enforced. Granting any concession the bill offers without meaningful enforcement is more than irresponsible; it is also offensive to law-abiding Americans.

You are about to make a vitally important decision that I, and many Missourians, will remember when we again cast our votes for Senator. I trust you will act in the best interests of our nation and your constituents by voting against Senate Bill 1348.

Just a random thought I had as I surveyed the fine work of the other presenters on this comment page. Follow along with me on this, it could make really good sense.

We know that there is a criminal element that migrates in droves across our swiss-cheese like border. I'm not talking about all of the illegal aliens, because, as we all know, they ARE criminals for violating our border and immigration laws. No, I'm talking about the ones that come here with an established criminal past in their former home country. Now I'm a believer in sharing with other countries, open trade, etc. We need to build a border fence, right. In fact, they are willing to put up new sections now. Here's a fair and economical way to do it. Let's use OUR prison population as labor to erect the fence. We can give the prsioners a couple of options: 1) Complete your section of fence and we will reduce your sentence by x-amount of time (based on the nature of the crimes) at a pre-determined rate, OR 2) If you want to escape, hell, go right ahead. We'll let you waltz right on in to Mexico and enjoy the "good life" you've been dreaming about during your period of incarceration here in the states. Hell, adios muchachos!

We get some of their scum and they get some of our finer citizens in return. What a hell-of-a-deal. Build a wall AND at the same time, reduce the size of our prison population. Heck, the Lib's are always complaining about overcrowding in our jails, well here you go Nancy, not anymore.

Just food for thought. Jamie, keep up the good work.

Kudos to Jaime for getting Claire on his show to explain her immigration bill vote on cloture. Although she weaseled out of it by finally stating how confusing these votes are, at least Jamie made a good attempt.

The bottom line is that cloture ends a filibuster which would stall a bill in its tracks; Claire voted to END the filibuster so, in her words, they could "continue the debate"..wink, nod. Maybe she was confused because Hillary Clinton, with whom Claire has a 90% voting record, opted out with the rest of the cowardly presidential candidates. That being the case, if she is truely opposed to this bill all she needed to do was look around the room and vote with the senators who were the most vocal against the bill, like Jeff Sessions.

Claire's appearance on the show illustrated the differences in the sytle of contempt our politicians have for the voters. Bond (Republican) refuses to come on or even correspond. McCaskill (Democrat) will make herself available then assume she can fool the unwashed masses with a few slick statements.

Note to Claire: Thanks for appearing, but next time remember that Bullmoosers aren't the same as your run-of-the-mill democrats who blindly vote the ticket.

Jamie - Like the new blog and have linked to it from Another Rovian Conspiracy. As a big fan of Teddy, have to say that I agree with much of what he prescribed.

But, I do have to disagree with your assessment of political parties and the election process. First, two party systems come about because of the environment in which they operate. It was no surprise that there were multiple parties in Weimar Germany, given its proportional representation model. Similarly, it's no surprise that there are 3 major (2 major, 1 minor) parties in the UK given the "first past the post" process and the parliamentary system of coalition governments. France's run-off elections also explain the existence of multiple parties there. Here in the US, there are two parties, ostensibly representing 150 million people each (assuming that the country is evenly divided between Left & Right), because we have only 1 election, have a bi-cameral legislature, and a very powerful executive position. There isn't a second chance.

Second, by definition voting for someone else is compromising you principles - since no single person agrees with you on 100% of all possible issues. However, the key is to find the person (or party) that agrees with you on most issues.

Don't like taxes? Higher probability that you'll get lower taxes with the GOP.

Don't like War, the military, or National Defense? Vote for the Dems, since Scoop Jackson's legacy has been obliterated.

Don't like Immigration? Then don't vote for a professed pro-immigration candidate in the primaries - in 2000 or 2008.

Which brings me to my final point: The primaries are the very time in which each of us has an opportunity to decide which way a political party will go. People often complain about the lack of choices in a 2 party system. But they fail to consider the multitude of choices that lead up to the final, general election. Don't like immigration? Don't support McCain, Rudy, or any of the Dems.

The fact that the primaries have started early is our opportunity to influence the candidates (those running and those that have not yet thrown their hat in the ring, such as Thompson) as to how we feel on each issue. No, no single candidate will agree with you 100% of the time and you will have to compromise. But, it's incumbent upon each voter to determine what are the most important issues to them, rank the candidates on those issues, and support those they agree with, and vote accordingly when the time comes.

Yes, it's frustrating to have the party you identify with not identify with you on a political issue you are most fervent about, but its more frustrating to take your ball and go home - when doing so elects the other side

Unfortunately, the only way to avoid compromising your principles on every issue is to find yourself a nice, deserted island where you can be dictator of yourself.

In 2002 the U.S. Secretary of the Navy established the First Navy Jack version of the Gadsden flag as a symbol of the War on Terror for the U.S. Navy. As of September 11, 2002, all naval ships now fly the First Navy Jack.

This from a woman whose nomination to Bush's cabinet was pulled because she hired illegals without paying taxes. In the typical race-baiter style, she begins her article with all the stereotypes that have never crossed our minds during this immigration debate. Then she lamely accuses those who oppose her view of perpetuating the stereotypes she just reminded us of in the previous paragraph.

Linda, get a clue! You're obviously a new player in the race-baiting arena. We have wised up to these trick thanks to years of watching Jesse and Al carry on. We don't buy it, nor do we feel guilty because we expect immigrants to come in legally through the FRONT door. And yes, we DO have a distaste for multi-family living arrangements. In case you haven't noticed from the perch atop your gated community, third-world countries have multi-family living arrangements; it hasn't that way in most of America since the industrial revolution.

Ms. Chavez might also want to check her history books as well. Immigrants from past eras came to this country with every intention of assimilating into the culture. My aunt loves to tell stories of the times my grandmother, an Italian immigrant, would REFUSE to teach her kids anything but a few Italian words for fear that they wouldn't learn English. Contrast this to today's illegal immigrants who have no respect for our laws and now expect us to "press one for English".

Disgustingly, she equates our desire to build a fence and deport these law breakers with forced sterilization and eugenics, then tells us we have no chance of winning. Sorry Linda, this doesn't play with us "angry, frightened, and predjudiced loudmouths". We have been called these kinds of names before by better race-baiters than you.

The joke of the day comes in the next paragraph when she tells us how all the illegals pay taxes. I'm thinking maybe all of them except the ones who work for her. I wonder if she even pays them minimum wage.

They booed Miss USA in Mexico. But on a POSITIVE note, they ALWAYS resort to mockery and the type of name calling Ms. Chavez is resorting to in her article when they are losing their argument on its merits. So is it any wonder that four days later they give us this?:

I think you guys might be pretending that TR would be the ideal modern Republican candidate. I think you're a bit wrong. He rebelled against the cronyism establishment and worked tirelessly for progressive labor and consumer policies. He would most definitely NOT support the "Fair Tax." He was the one who wanted the Estate Tax and wrote extensively on the reason for the wealthiest Americans funding the government. Furthermore, you all should be skeptical of a tax policy that not even Larry Kudlow or BEn Stein would endorse. the "Fair Tax" has VERY few actual economists who see it as remotely plausible, as enticing as it is.

TR would be appalled at the way that the Bush administration has rendered impotent important regulatory agencies, from FDA to Mine Safety to Labor to DoE to SEC to EPA.

You could kiss ANWR drilling goodbye. Ken Lay would have been executed.

His foreign policy would have brought us to Darfur, Liberia, IVory Coast Burma, and maybe Pyongyang before Iraq. And he would not have had that half-witted MORON Rumsfeld botching the operation from the get-go.

I guess that what I'm saying is that he was more progressive than many of you are making him out to be. The top marginal rate would probably be over 50%, labor protections would be tighter, and environmental protections would make Rush Limbaugh cringe.

But man, wouldn't it be nice to have him as our Commander in Chief for the past 8 years? *sigh*

What makes you think we think he should be a "Republican" candidate? He's the anti-modern day Republican. Modern day Republicans bear zero resemblence to TR.

Funny how pompous "philosophers" like you pipe in on a non partisan website and try to jam some "irony" up our asses after you set up the straw Republican man. You're nose in the air approach to politics is a reason why this country's political discourse sucks. You're too busy scoring points to engage in legitimate discussion.

Taxes? Yes, TR was clearly misguided but reacting to a particular time when, by the way, wealthy Americans were a rare but small and powerful group making tons off of cheap and mistreated labor. His view of proportionate responsibility was no doubt guided by the fact that America, at that point 25% the population it is now, had a very defined have and have not sector.

As one who has explored TR's philosophy as opposed to cut and pasted political views from 1912 into today, I have no doubt TR's more socialist views on taxation would have developed into a policy that would abhor the corporate welfare of today and would have confronted the alleged "free marketers" who seem to have no problem chest beating about "free markets" but then turn around and want tax breaks and bail outs every step of the way sponsored by U.S taxpayers--something you, no doubt, dig.

And to say he'd have us in Darfur etc. is crazy. Simply applying his old world world view to today to make your point is ignorant.

And anyone who says the FDA is an "important" regulatory agency is mentally ill. The FDA, like the FAA and other agencies that are inexplicably designed to both promote and regulate industries are by their very nature corrupt and dangerous. TR would never have allowed such arrangments since they kill more people than they protect and they are the very example of Government welfare for big business. Why in the hell do you think you pay so much for medicine? Because the FDA controls the market. TR was a watchdog, but he wasn't a pig who turned to the government for solutions to every problem. Your laundry list of trough feeding, revenue sucking alphabet nanny fifedoms ("FDA to Mine Safety to Labor to DoE to SEC to EPA") says a lot about your addiction and love of ginormous government. You really think TR would put up with all that strangling garbage?

Nice try. Now wash my dishes, feed my dog, and get out of my house.

LOL! Talk about straw man! Read your own post! My whole point was that you all seem to want to remake TR into the perfect Republican under the clearly phony ostensible "nonpartisan" facade.

HOw indeed was TR "clearly misguided" on Estate taxes, or taxes in general, oh prognosticator of prognosticators! His own commentary speaks otherwise.

WHen did I anoint myself some kind of philosopher? As to regulation, my whole point is that he would see to it that any regulation was done RIGHT instead of done by cronies of the industries that they were ostensibly regulating!

If you had actually READ my post, you might have seen that all I was saying is that you all were denying many of the more progressive aspects of his policy in favor what many posters were pretending his views actually would have been.

We're really not too far off on many of the issues over which you are making yourself apoplectic. Relax, son. You sound like a kid who got his ass kicked too much in school, read a few books, listened to a little talk radio, and suddenly thinks he's erudite. I'd LOVE to see how tough you talk in person someday. Such a sad thing how the internet saves so many punks the sound drubbings that they so richly deserve....
